 There are 7 Local Authority projects in Phase II of the LAPD:

Waste prevention initiative at Local Authority operated swimming pools in Co. Cork.
  The aim of this project is to change existing waste disposal practices of customers who visit and use Cork County Council run swimming pools. This change can be achieved using behavioural change educational and awareness programmes. New standards on waste elimination and prevention will be introduced at the pools and integrated into the daily operation and management of these facilities. Click here for further details

Glan Thoraí – If not you, who?

  This project aims to achieve a reduction / elimination in the unnecessary volume of waste that is currently being generated. It will implement an education and awareness campaign, obtain baseline data on the waste quantity and composition of waste arising on the island, obtain baseline views and opinions of the Islanders on environmental topics such as renewable energy, waste management, local ecology and ecosystems and water conservation and devise and implement an environmental sustainability plan sympathetic to the local environment.  Click here for further details.

Reducing Food Waste and Energy use at Dundrum Town Centre

  The main aims of the project will be a reduction of biological municipal waste by
  • Segregation of waste types thereby  facilitating the reduction of co-mingling /contamination and raising awareness of waste quantities and categories as significant fractions can be seen.
  • Prevention of waste generation at source.
  • Raising awareness of staff and customers leading to behavioural change

Farm Packaging Prevention Scheme

  This project aims to achieve an overall reduction of preventable wastes arising on farms. It includes initiatives such as an increase in Bulk Buying, Green Procurement and Waste Management Awareness on Farms. It will also create improved water use efficiency on farms and carry out Waste Management Training through Teagasc for farmers. Click here for further details.

Prevention programme to sustain Roscommon County Council headquarters and Arts Centre with regard to energy, water and purchasing

  This project aims to:
  • quantify energy and water usage in buildings and implement prevention mesures
  • assess purchasing in Roscommon County Council and implement guidelines to limit and reduce waste.
  • train all staff on prevention measures and sustain measures in new headquarters.
  • deliver best practice guidelines with RCC as case study for other similar large organisation.

An Investigation Into Waste Prevention Opportunities In A Rural Town

 
 This project will implement practical ways of waste elimination, prevention and re-use and resource conservation  on a street in a typical hight street of a country town.

Outcomes will include a reduction in waste generation, energy and water consumption and an increase in re-use of material and a better awareness of waste prevention, re-use and resource conservation.

Convenience Waste - Tackling Waste Prevention – An integrated Retailer-Consumer Approach, Service Station Convenience Store

 
This initiative proposes to measure the type and quantity of packaging materials generated in a service station convenience store, the amount of other disposable products purchased such as newspapers and batteries and the amount of ‘back door’ waste generated by the retailer (especially biodegradable waste); identify the critical triggers for purchasing and the associated behavioural patterns of the convenience lifestyle and initiate new procedures and practices for the retailer and consumer.
